A grieving mother is warning parents about a hidden household danger after her one-year-old son died in what she described as a devastating freak accident involving a large mirror inside their home.

Lindsay Dewey shared the heartbreaking story on Instagram following the death of her son Reed, hoping that speaking publicly could help prevent another family from experiencing a similar tragedy.

“Reed has had a traumatic accident, and we need a miracle,” Dewey wrote in an emotional post shortly after the incident.

Days later, she confirmed that her young son had died from catastrophic injuries.

“That Was the Last Memory I Have”

Dewey explained that Reed had been quietly playing near the kitchen while his siblings were elsewhere in the home.

“Last I saw him, he was sitting near the kitchen by the pool table playing with Magna-Tiles by himself,” she wrote.

“I remember looking right at him when I passed him and thought how cute it was he was playing by himself instead of with his siblings.”

“He was just so content and happy. And that was the last memory or image I have in my head of him.”

Moments later, she heard a loud crash and rushed to investigate.

“At first I felt relieved thinking he must’ve been okay, just in shock or something,” she explained after finding him awake but injured on the floor.

However, it quickly became clear that the injuries were far more severe than she initially realized.

Mirror Believed to Have Fallen Forward

According to Dewey, a large heavy mirror had reportedly been leaning unsecured against a wall inside the home.

She later noticed a suction bowl attached to the mirror and believes Reed may have pulled on it while trying to remove the bowl, causing the mirror to topple forward.

“The mirror hit his head in the most precise way and fractured his skull,” she wrote.

The impact caused a traumatic brain injury, and despite emergency efforts, Reed did not survive.

Parents Flood Social Media With Reactions

After sharing Reed’s story online, Dewey received thousands of messages from parents, medical professionals, and supporters.

“This is such an eye opener,” one person commented. “It never crossed my mind that it could somehow accidentally happen to one of my children.”

Another commenter, identifying themselves as a pediatrician, wrote: “When we lose a child due to a safety accident, it’s so important to share.”

Many parents said they immediately began securing mirrors, televisions, and heavy furniture in their homes after hearing Reed’s story.

Safety Experts Warn About Tip-Over Accidents

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has repeatedly warned families about the dangers of unsecured furniture, mirrors, and televisions around young children.

According to the agency, tip-over accidents remain a major cause of serious injury and death involving toddlers and small children.

Safety experts recommend anchoring heavy furniture and mirrors to walls whenever possible and avoiding leaving large objects leaning unsecured inside homes.

Dewey said her family had already taken extensive childproofing precautions throughout the house, including gates, locks, and anchored furniture, making the tragedy even harder to comprehend.

“People Need to Know This”

Despite her grief, Dewey said she felt compelled to share the story publicly to raise awareness for other families.

“It’s eating at me because I feel like people who have things in their homes with little kids need to know this,” she wrote.

“As much as I hate that Reed’s precious life had to be taken from this, it definitely makes me relieved to know that sharing should help prevent this trauma/tragedy from happening to another child/family.”

Since the story went viral, many child safety experts and parenting communities have continued using Reed’s story as a reminder of how quickly ordinary household items can become dangerous around small children.
