A horrifying case from Brazil continues haunting people years later after a family became convinced a woman may have been buried alive.

The disturbing story centered around 37-year-old Rosangela Almeida dos Santos from the town of Riachão das Neves in northeastern Brazil.

What began as a tragic funeral soon turned into an international mystery involving alleged screams from a cemetery, claims of movement inside a coffin, and shocking discoveries during an exhumation.

Rosangela Was Declared Dead After Medical Emergency

According to reports, Rosangela was hospitalized in January 2018 after suffering serious health complications linked to septic shock.

Doctors reportedly said she experienced two cardiac arrests before being pronounced dead at Hospital do Oeste in Barreiras, Brazil.

Family members later explained that Rosangela had dealt with health problems throughout much of her life, including fainting spells and regular use of anticonvulsant medication.

After a wake attended by loved ones, she was buried at Senhora Santana Cemetery on January 29, 2018.

At the time, nobody suspected anything unusual.

Residents Claimed They Heard Screams From the Cemetery

Around 11 days after the funeral, nearby residents reportedly began hearing strange noises coming from Rosangela’s tomb.

Locals claimed they heard banging sounds, groans, and screams coming from underground.

One resident later told Brazilian media she initially thought children were playing a prank near the cemetery before realizing the sounds appeared to be coming directly from the grave.

The terrifying reports quickly spread through the town, prompting worried neighbors to contact Rosangela’s family.

Family Opened the Coffin After Hearing the Claims

When relatives arrived at the cemetery, they reportedly decided to open the tomb to investigate the disturbing allegations.

Crowds soon gathered as Rosangela’s coffin was removed from the grave.

According to family members, what they discovered inside left them horrified.

Relatives claimed Rosangela’s hands and forehead showed injuries that were not visible during the funeral.

They also alleged that nails securing the coffin lid appeared loose and that scratches could allegedly be seen inside the casket.

Family Believed She Tried to Escape

Rosangela’s mother later claimed her daughter appeared to have fought to escape the coffin.

“She had tried to open the lid,” she reportedly said.

Family members also alleged there were traces of blood inside the casket and claimed Rosangela’s body appeared positioned differently from when she was buried.

The shocking details fueled fears that she may have regained consciousness underground after being mistakenly declared dead.

As rumors spread, hundreds of people reportedly gathered at the cemetery hoping to witness the exhumation themselves.

Authorities Investigated the Disturbing Claims

The bizarre case quickly attracted national and international attention.

Police opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rosangela’s death and burial, while hospital officials stated they would cooperate fully with authorities.

Investigators examined the family’s allegations along with reports of screams and banging heard near the cemetery.

The story rapidly spread online because of its terrifying similarities to classic fears about being buried alive.

Officials Reached a Different Conclusion

Despite the family’s suspicions, authorities later concluded there was no evidence that Rosangela had been buried alive.

Investigators reportedly believed many of the alleged screams and noises may have been fueled by panic and rumors spreading throughout the community.

Officials maintained that Rosangela had died before burial and said they found no proof she survived inside the coffin.

Even years later, however, the chilling combination of alleged screams, scratches inside the coffin, and claims of movement underground continues unsettling people around the world.
