The family of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk is urging a Utah court to make key evidence public in the case against the man accused of killing him, arguing that transparency is essential to maintaining public trust in the justice system.
The request was made during the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, who has been charged in connection with Kirk’s fatal shooting in September 2025. Robinson has not been convicted, and the case remains pending.
Family Calls for Greater Transparency
Speaking on behalf of Kirk’s widow and parents, family attorney Jeffrey Neiman said evidence presented during the hearing, including video recordings and witness interviews, should be available for public viewing if it is admitted in court.
According to reports from the hearing, the family believes releasing the evidence would help prevent speculation and reinforce confidence in the judicial process. The judge directed prosecutors to prepare an edited version of certain recordings before deciding what, if anything, may be publicly released.
Defense Raises Fair Trial Concerns
Robinson’s attorney opposed releasing the material, arguing that widespread public access could prejudice potential jurors and jeopardize his client’s right to a fair trial.
The defense also disputed prosecutors’ interpretation of recorded interviews and electronic communications, arguing they should not be treated as confessions. Those issues are expected to be addressed further as the case moves through the court system.
Investigation Continues
Prosecutors allege Robinson fatally shot Kirk during a Turning Point USA event before later surrendering to authorities following a brief manhunt. Investigators have presented surveillance footage, witness testimony, and recorded interviews as part of the preliminary hearing, though much of the evidence has been reviewed only by the judge.
The hearing is expected to determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial. At this stage, the allegations against Robinson remain unproven, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
