Rossum Says It Was About Growth, Not Walking Away
Emmy Rossum has addressed long-standing speculation about her departure from Shameless, explaining that her decision to leave the hit series after nine seasons was driven by career ambitions rather than personal reasons.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Rossum said she never wanted to leave simply because she no longer enjoyed the show. Instead, she felt it was the right time to pursue new creative opportunities after filming 110 episodes as Fiona Gallagher.
She Wanted to Build Her Own Projects
Rossum revealed that she had already launched her own production company and was preparing to produce Angelyne, a project she had been developing with encouragement from Shameless creator John Wells.
When the series was offered two additional seasons, she said she felt committed to the new project and knew it was time to begin the next chapter of her career. Although she described leaving as emotional, she was also excited to take on a new challenge behind the camera.
Addressing the Biggest Misconception
The actress also pushed back against one rumor that has followed her for years. Rossum said the idea that she left the series to “go have babies” was completely inaccurate.
According to Rossum, her decision was rooted in professional growth. She wanted greater creative control and the opportunity to develop original television projects rather than remain in the same role indefinitely.
Reflecting on Her Pay Dispute
Rossum also revisited her widely publicized salary negotiations during the show’s later seasons. After serving as a co-lead alongside William H. Macy for years, she sought compensation that reflected her contribution to the series.
She ultimately earned $350,000 per episode during the final part of her run. Rossum emphasized that the negotiations were never simply about money, but about fairness, equal recognition, and being valued for the work she performed.
