It’s something millions of people do every night without thinking — plugging in their phone before going to sleep.
But over time, questions have grown about whether that habit is actually safe or slowly damaging your device.
According to experts, the answer isn’t as alarming as many believe. Modern smartphones are designed with built-in systems that stop charging once the battery reaches 100%.
That means you’re unlikely to “overcharge” your phone or cause immediate damage just by leaving it plugged in overnight.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect for your battery. Keeping your phone at 100% for long periods can create stress on the battery over time, which may reduce its lifespan.
Another factor is heat. Charging your phone under a pillow or blanket can trap heat, which experts say is one of the biggest causes of battery wear — and in rare cases, safety risks.
To extend battery life, many recommend keeping your charge between about 30% and 80% instead of constantly topping it to full.
Using certified chargers and enabling features like optimized charging can also help reduce long-term damage.
So while overnight charging isn’t dangerous for most modern phones, small habits can make a big difference in how long your battery lasts.
