Julio Macias Gonzalez, 17, was enjoying a family dinner when he suddenly began convulsing. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but he could not be saved. Doctors noted a bruise on his neck, later identifying it as a hickey, and concluded that the suction had caused a blood clot that traveled to his brain, triggering a fatal stroke.

While this may sound unbelievable, medical experts confirm the mechanism is real. Similar cases, though extremely rare, have been documented — including a woman in New Zealand who was partially paralyzed in 2011 after a hickey caused a clot to reach her heart.

Doctors emphasize that the risk from hickeys is extremely low and that most are harmless. Experts also stress the importance of being aware of unusual symptoms, like sudden dizziness or weakness, which could indicate a serious vascular issue.

This case remains a rare and heartbreaking example of how unpredictable medical events can sometimes be.
