My knees went weak.
“What… what do you mean?” I whispered.
The officer looked at me carefully.
“Ma’am,” he said, “we need you to stay calm.”
My heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear him.
“That bracelet,” he continued, “was part of an ongoing investigation.”
My stomach dropped.
“Investigation?” I repeated.
He nodded.
“We’ve been tracking a group involved in identity changes and underground networks. People disappearing… starting new lives.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What does that have to do with my daughter?” I asked.
The officer glanced at his partner.
Then back at me.
“She wasn’t taken,” he said quietly.
Silence.
“What?” I whispered.
“She left,” he said.
The world tilted.
“No,” I said immediately. “No, that’s not possible. She would never—”
“Ma’am,” he said gently, “we have reason to believe your daughter made contact with this group willingly.”
My hands started shaking.
“Why?” I asked.
The officer hesitated.
“That’s what we’re trying to understand,” he said.
My husband stepped forward suddenly.
“This is nonsense,” he snapped. “Our daughter would never do something like that.”
The officer’s expression changed.
“Sir,” he said slowly, “we also need to ask you a few questions.”
The air shifted.
Something felt… wrong.
“Why him?” I asked, my voice trembling.
The officer reached into his folder.
Pulled out a document.
“Because,” he said,
“your daughter wasn’t the only one hiding something.”
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?” I whispered.
He placed the paper in my hands.
It was a report.
A financial report.
Transactions.
Large ones.
From ten years ago.
The date…
The night Nana disappeared.
My breath caught.
The account holder’s name…
Was my husband’s.
I looked up slowly.
“No…” I whispered.
My husband’s face had gone completely pale.
“Natalie, I can explain—” he started.
But I stepped back.
“Explain WHAT?” I cried.
The officer spoke again.
“We believe your husband had contact with the same network your daughter joined.”
My mind went blank.
“Why?” I asked, my voice breaking.
The officer didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have to.
I turned to my husband.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
His silence…
Told me everything.
