Cher has revealed she was left completely stunned after discovering that her real legal name was not what she had believed for most of her life.
The music icon, known globally as simply “Cher”, explained that she had always thought her birth name was Cherilyn Sarkisian, only to later find out there had been a long-standing mix-up involving her birth records.
According to Cher, she only learned the truth years later when she requested her official documents while preparing to legally simplify her name in the late 1970s.
At that point, she was reportedly “shocked” to discover that her first name was actually registered as Cheryl, not Cherilyn as she had always assumed.
Cher later explained that the confusion likely stemmed from her mother’s exhausted state after childbirth, leading to a misunderstanding when the name was recorded.
She has previously shared that this discovery played a key role in her decision to officially become mononymously known as Cher, dropping all surnames and simplifying her identity into the single name the world now recognizes.
The revelation has since been included in her memoir, where she reflects on how surprising it was to learn something so fundamental about her own identity so late in life.
Despite the initial shock, Cher has often spoken about embracing the situation with humor, saying it ultimately reinforced her decision to fully own the name “Cher” as her brand and identity.
The story has resurfaced again following recent discussions around her memoir and ongoing media interest in her personal life and career legacy.
For fans, it’s another reminder that even one of the world’s most iconic stars still has unexpected stories hidden in her past.
