A tragic incident in Durham, North Carolina, has led to criminal charges against the grandson of legendary basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, after a 15-year-old boy was killed in a collision.

Authorities say Joseph Savarino, 26, has been charged with driving while impaired (DWI) following a crash that left teenager Jack O’Shea dead on April 18.

The incident happened when Jack, who was riding an electric bicycle, was struck by an SUV at an intersection in northwest Durham.

Police confirmed the crash occurred just before 9 p.m., with emergency services arriving shortly after, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court records, Savarino’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08, and he admitted to drinking prior to driving.

Following the crash, Savarino was arrested and later released on a $100,000 secured bond, with his driver’s license also revoked by a judge.

The case has drawn widespread attention due to Savarino’s connection to Coach K, one of the most well-known figures in college basketball history, having led Duke University to five NCAA championships.

The victim’s mother described her son in an emotional statement as “smart, athletic, fearless, and full of life,” saying the family is devastated by the sudden loss.

Investigators say the case remains ongoing, with Savarino due back in court next month as authorities continue to review evidence surrounding the crash.

The tragedy has also renewed conversations around drunk driving, road safety, and the lasting impact of preventable accidents on families and communities.
