Donald Trump raised eyebrows during a recent White House speech after making an unexpected personal remark about his late mother and the British royal family.
While speaking at an event tied to the state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Trump reflected on his mother’s admiration for the British monarchy.
A Royal “Crush” Claim
Trump told the audience that his Scotland-born mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was a devoted admirer of the royal family and regularly watched royal ceremonies on television.
He then made a more unusual claim involving King Charles himself.
“She really did love the family… I also remember her saying very clearly, ‘Charles, young Charles, he is so cute,’” Trump said.
“My mother had a crush on Charles, can you believe it?”
The remark drew laughter from the crowd, though it quickly spread online for its unexpected personal nature.
Royal Visit Atmosphere
The comments came during formal diplomatic events surrounding the UK state visit, which has included meetings between senior royals and U.S. officials, as well as ceremonial appearances at the White House.
The visit is part of broader efforts to reinforce the long-standing UK–US relationship.
Mixed Reactions
While delivered in a lighthearted tone, Trump’s comments added an unusual moment to an otherwise formal occasion, with viewers divided between finding it humorous and oddly out of place.
The speech has since been widely shared online, adding another viral moment to an already closely watched diplomatic visit.
