The baseball world is mourning the loss of a true icon, as tributes pour in for longtime New York Yankees radio voice John Sterling.

During a heartfelt moment at Yankee Stadium, fans honored the legendary broadcaster with chants echoing throughout the Bronx — a powerful reminder of just how much his voice meant to generations.

Among those paying tribute was former Yankees manager and current analyst Joe Girardi, who reflected on Sterling’s passion, humor, and lasting impact.

“Just Sadness”

Speaking about the loss, Girardi didn’t hold back his emotions.

“Just sadness,” he said. “Because I know how much he meant… to the Yankees, to me, and to people.”

Sterling, who spent 64 years in broadcasting, became synonymous with the Yankees after joining the team in 1989. He remained behind the mic until his retirement in April 2024 — and even returned for postseason games later that year.

A Voice Fans Will Never Forget

Sterling’s signature home run calls became part of baseball history.

From his iconic opener — “It is high, it is far, it is gone!” — to personalized calls for stars like Aaron Judge and Alex Rodriguez, fans never knew what creative twist would come next.

“Always curious what that was going to be,” Girardi said. “He was so creative… and he never missed a beat.”

A Moment Girardi Will Never Forget

Girardi also shared a story that perfectly captured Sterling’s personality.

During a pre-game interview, Sterling suddenly stopped recording, pulled out his flip phone, and answered a call mid-show.

“He said, ‘Darling, I’m doing the manager’s show. I’ll call you back in three minutes,’” Girardi recalled, laughing. “I thought — who does that?”

It was a small but unforgettable moment that highlighted Sterling’s authenticity and unique charm.

More Than Just a Broadcaster

Beyond his voice, Girardi emphasized that Sterling genuinely cared about people.

“He wanted you to have success,” he said. “It wasn’t just a job — it meant something to him.”

Sterling’s ability to bring games to life — whether in a car, living room, or on the go — made him a constant companion for fans over decades.

“An Example of How to Live”

For Girardi, Sterling’s legacy goes far beyond baseball.

“He was an example of how you’re supposed to live,” he said. “Find your passion and do it as long as you can.”

As the Yankees community continues to grieve, one thing is clear:
the voice of John Sterling will never truly fade.
