Martin Short made a rare and emotional public appearance this week as he attended the Los Angeles screening of his upcoming Netflix documentary, Marty, Life Is Short, alongside his sons Oliver and Henry.

The appearance marked the first time the beloved comedian has stepped onto a red carpet with family since the devastating death of his daughter, Katherine Short, earlier this year.

Several longtime friends and Hollywood stars also attended the screening, including his Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez, along with Benny Blanco, Kate Hudson, Eugene Levy and Billy Crystal.

Remembering Katherine Short

In a statement released at the time, the Short family described Katherine as someone who brought “light and joy” to those around her and asked for privacy while grieving.

A Family Marked by Loss and Resilience

Martin Short has endured several deeply personal losses over the years. His wife of three decades, Nancy Dolman, died from ovarian cancer in 2010 at age 58.

Together, the couple adopted and raised three children: Katherine, Oliver and Henry.

Friends close to the actor have often described Short as someone who uses humor as both a profession and a coping mechanism, balancing public laughter with private grief.

Documentary Will Explore Career and Personal Struggles

Marty, Life Is Short is set to premiere on Netflix on May 12 and promises a more intimate look at the comedian’s decades-long career and personal life.

Directed by filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, the documentary combines archival footage, behind-the-scenes moments, and interviews with some of Short’s closest collaborators.

Appearances include Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, John Mulaney and Catherine O’Hara.

His Comments About Family Now Feel Even More Emotional

In a podcast interview last year, Short spoke candidly about how becoming a grandfather changed his outlook on aging and life itself.

He described his grandchildren as a source of joy and perspective, saying family had become more important than concerns about growing older.

Those remarks have resurfaced online following the recent tragedy, with many fans expressing sympathy and support for the actor and his family.

Fans Rally Around the Comedy Legend

Social media quickly filled with messages of encouragement after photos from the premiere emerged online. Many longtime fans praised Short for returning to public life while navigating unimaginable personal grief.

Despite the heartbreak surrounding the family, the premiere ultimately became a reminder of the support system around the veteran entertainer as he prepares to release one of the most personal projects of his career.
