A former flight attendant who worked for both budget and premium airlines in Asia has shared disturbing claims about life behind the scenes in the aviation industry, saying the glamorous image of the job hid a much darker reality.
Speaking anonymously to Vice Media, the ex-cabin crew worker said her six years in the industry exposed her to alleged sexual harassment, abusive passengers, extreme appearance pressure, and serious mental health struggles.
‘Appearance Was the Main KPI’
According to the former crew member, airline staff were constantly pressured to maintain a certain body image, regardless of the impact on their health.
She claimed some workers allegedly turned to dangerous substances to stay thin, while others underwent cosmetic procedures to meet airline standards.
In one of the most shocking allegations, she said a fellow flight attendant died during liposuction surgery after feeling pressure to maintain her appearance for the job.
Claims of Sexual Harassment and Abuse
The former attendant also described what she called a culture where inappropriate behavior was often ignored.
“The captain tried to get me to sleep with him,” she alleged, adding that refusing advances could allegedly lead to difficult treatment from senior staff afterward.
She also described dealing with passengers who became sexually inappropriate or aggressive during flights.
In one incident, she claimed a heavily intoxicated passenger allegedly began watching explicit content, undressing, and urinating on himself before crew members were forced to restrain him.
She also recalled catching passengers having sex in the back rows of an aircraft during a flight.
Disturbing Safety Allegations
Beyond passenger behavior, the former worker described moments she says made her fear for passenger safety.
She recalled one incident involving an alleged gang member attempting to smuggle loaded firearms onboard, claiming staff later realized the weapons could potentially have discharged in cargo due to pressure changes.
The ex-flight attendant also accused some senior crew members of using questionable methods to handle intoxicated passengers, including allegedly putting eye drops into drinks to make disruptive travelers sleepy.
No evidence was provided to confirm those allegations, and the airlines involved were not publicly identified.
Mental Health Struggles After Leaving Industry
After years in the role, the former crew member said she was later diagnosed with depression and claimed the emotional toll of constant stress, harassment, and abuse changed her permanently.
She also alleged that mental health struggles and suicide were sadly common topics among airline workers dealing with exhaustion and pressure behind the scenes.
The claims have sparked major discussion online, with many current and former airline workers sharing similar experiences about the hidden pressures of the aviation industry.
