Russell Andrews has publicly revealed that he has been diagnosed with ALS, the progressive neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
The 64-year-old actor shared the news during an emotional interview alongside his fiancée, Erica Tazel, where the couple spoke openly about how the diagnosis has changed their lives.
Andrews is known for appearing in projects including Straight Outta Compton and Better Call Saul.
Actor Says Early Symptoms Were Easy to Miss
During the interview, Andrews explained that he was officially diagnosed in late 2025 after initially believing his symptoms were caused by stress, pinched nerves, or even a stroke.
He described experiencing muscle twitches, weakness in his arms, and difficulty performing everyday tasks he once handled easily.
At one point, he noticed himself frequently dropping cups and struggling with physical movements that previously felt routine.
His fiancée also recalled seeing subtle changes long before the diagnosis became official, including shifts in the way he walked and completed simple activities.
Fiancée’s Response Leaves Viewers Emotional
One of the most emotional moments came when Erica Tazel described learning about the diagnosis.
She said that despite the devastating news, her immediate reaction was to reassure Andrews that she still wanted to marry him.
“I still want to be your wife,” she recalled telling him after doctors confirmed he had ALS.
Tazel also spoke about stepping into the role of caregiver while supporting Andrews through the progression of the disease.
What ALS Does to the Body
ALS is a degenerative condition that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually leading to muscle weakness, loss of movement, speech difficulties, and eventual paralysis.
According to medical organizations, there is currently no cure for the disease, though treatments can sometimes help slow progression and manage symptoms.
The condition gained widespread public attention in recent years through awareness campaigns and celebrity diagnoses.
Couple Praised for Their Honesty
Following the interview, many fans praised the couple online for speaking candidly about both the emotional and practical realities of living with ALS.
Others were especially moved by Tazel’s comments about unconditional love and commitment during such a difficult situation.
Despite the diagnosis, Andrews said the support he has received from loved ones and ALS advocacy groups has helped him remain hopeful while adjusting to a very different chapter of life.
