Hannah Aberegg, who appeared in Netflix’s Girls Incarcerated, has died at the age of 25 following a police shooting in Indiana.

The incident happened on May 6 at a Phillips 66 gas station in South Bend after officers responded to a welfare check involving concerns about her mental health and reports that she may have been armed.

According to Indiana State Police, officers located Aberegg shortly after 3:30 p.m. and shots were fired within minutes of the encounter.

Police Say Hannah Was Armed During Encounter

Authorities say surveillance footage shows Aberegg pulling out a handgun during the interaction with officers.

A South Bend police officer then opened fire. Aberegg received emergency medical treatment at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Indiana State Police later addressed rumors spreading online, emphasizing that their officers were not present until after the shooting had already occurred.

Investigation Into Shooting Continues

Indiana State Police confirmed that body camera footage, in-car video, and surveillance footage are all being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials stated that crisis response teams were not deployed because protocol does not allow those units to respond when an armed individual is involved.

The completed investigation will eventually be handed to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine whether the officer’s use of force was legally justified.

Remembered as a Devoted Mother

Aberegg leaves behind two young children, and her obituary described her as a deeply emotional and caring person whose life centered around her family.

It stated that her children were “her purpose, her joy, and her greatest pride.”

Friends and supporters online have also shared tributes remembering her openness, loyalty, and struggles with addiction and mental health challenges.

Hannah Became Known Through Netflix Series

Aberegg first gained public attention after appearing in the second season of Girls Incarcerated, which followed teenage girls inside Indiana’s Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility.

The series documented her difficult upbringing and ongoing battles with addiction while trying to rebuild her life.

Her death has sparked renewed discussions online surrounding mental health crises, police response procedures, and the long-term struggles faced by many former reality television participants.
