Adam Driver has publicly addressed the controversial claims made about him in Lena Dunham’s new memoir, Famesick.

The actor briefly responded during a press conference at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival while promoting his latest movie, Paper Tiger.

When asked about Dunham’s descriptions of their relationship during their years working together on HBO’s Girls, Driver replied: “I have no comment on any of that.”

His Joke Drew Laughter at Cannes

After initially declining to elaborate, Driver added one unexpected line that quickly spread online.

“I’m saving it all for my book,” he joked, prompting laughter from reporters and attendees at the event.

The comment marked the first time Driver publicly acknowledged the memoir since its release.

Dunham Described Their Relationship as “Complicated”

In Famesick, Dunham reflected on her years creating and starring in Girls, along with the emotional dynamics behind the scenes.

She described Driver as talented, intense, private, and at times difficult to fully understand.

The memoir also included claims that the actor could sometimes be verbally aggressive and recalled one incident involving him throwing a chair near her during an argument.

The Pair Have Not Spoken Since 2017

According to Dunham, she and Driver have not remained in contact since Girls ended in 2017.

She admitted feeling emotionally affected by parts of their friendship and professional relationship, especially as Driver’s career rapidly exploded during and after the show’s success.

Driver went on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest actors through films like Marriage Story and the modern Star Wars: The Force Awakens trilogy.

Dunham Says Her Goal Was Not to Attack Him

While promoting the memoir, Dunham clarified that she was not trying to portray Driver as uniquely problematic.

Instead, she said the book explored the emotional complexity of working closely with creative people while navigating fame, pressure, illness, and personal growth at a young age.

She also praised Driver’s talent and described their onscreen chemistry as powerful and deeply connected.

Fans Are Divided Over the Memoir Revelations

The memoir has sparked major debate online among longtime fans of Girls.

Some readers praised Dunham for openly discussing uncomfortable relationships and emotional experiences behind the scenes.

Others questioned whether private conflicts should have been shared publicly years after the series ended.

Driver Remains One of Hollywood’s Most Private Stars

Unlike many major celebrities, Driver rarely comments publicly on personal matters or industry drama.

The actor has largely kept his family life and professional relationships out of the spotlight throughout his career.

That privacy is part of why his brief response at Cannes generated so much attention online.

Interest Around ‘Girls’ Continues Years Later

Even nearly a decade after the show ended, Girls continues to spark conversation because of its complicated cast dynamics and cultural impact.

The series helped launch several major careers and remains one of HBO’s most discussed modern dramas.

Dunham’s memoir has now reopened public interest in what life behind the scenes may have really been like.
