Amy Grant has opened up about the emotional and physical challenges she faced following a traumatic brain injury in 2022.
Speaking in a recent interview, she reflected on how the experience affected her daily life, including memory, balance, and communication.
Feeling “steps behind”
Grant described the early stages of recovery as isolating and frustrating.
“I just remember saying… ‘What if this is all I get back?’” she said, explaining that she felt disconnected, like she was “down the hall and in a back bedroom” while others moved ahead in conversation.
Vince Gill’s perspective
Her husband, Vince Gill, offered advice that helped shift her outlook during that uncertain time.
He told her: “Life happens to every one of us every day… all you do is you just take the hand you’re dealt that day and live the life that you get.”
A series of health challenges
Grant’s recovery followed a number of serious health issues in recent years, including open-heart surgery, throat surgery, and shoulder surgery.
Her brain injury occurred after a bicycle accident in 2022, which required hospitalization and ongoing recovery.
Adjusting to a new normal
Even now, Grant says she continues to deal with short-term memory issues and balance difficulties.
“I still have issues with my short-term memory… sometimes I walk around like I’m drunk and I just have to laugh about all of it,” she shared, highlighting her effort to stay positive.
Finding strength in support
Throughout her recovery, Grant has credited Gill as a steady source of support.
“Vince is just steady,” she said, adding that his presence and reassurance helped make each day of the journey more manageable.
Moving forward one day at a time
Grant’s story reflects a broader message about resilience and adaptation.
While her recovery is ongoing, she continues to focus on taking life day by day, guided by the perspective her husband shared during one of her most difficult moments.
