A Friendship That Endured

More than a decade after ending their marriage, Antonio Banderas says he and ex-wife Melanie Griffith continue to share a close friendship built on mutual respect and honesty.

Speaking in an interview with People, the 65-year-old actor described Griffith as “if not my best friend, one of my best friends,” adding that they still enjoy spending time together whenever he’s in Los Angeles.

Putting Family First

Banderas said maintaining a positive relationship after their divorce was especially important for their family. The former couple married in 1996, welcomed their daughter Stella Banderas later that year, and finalized their divorce in 2015 after nearly two decades together.

He credited their ability to remain close to the way they handled their separation, saying they were always sincere with each other and focused on creating a healthy environment for their children.

The actor also spoke warmly about Griffith’s role as a parent, calling her an “unbelievable mother.” In addition to Stella, Griffith has three other children from previous relationships, including actress Dakota Johnson.

Banderas said he is proud to see all of their children grow into successful and caring adults, describing that as one of life’s greatest rewards.

Still Sharing Special Moments

The former couple has remained publicly supportive of one another over the years. In April 2026, they were photographed together during a dinner outing in Los Angeles and later reunited for a family photo alongside Stella and her husband, Alex Gruszynski.

Elsewhere in the interview, Banderas reflected on the heart attack he suffered in 2017, saying the experience changed his perspective on life.

Banderas is currently promoting Tony, a biographical film about the late chef Anthony Bourdain, which premieres in select theaters on August 7.
