A Texas jury has sentenced former FedEx driver Tanner Horner to death by lethal injection for the 2022 kidnapping and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand, closing one of the most disturbing child murder cases in recent years.

The sentencing comes nearly four years after Athena vanished from her family’s property in Paradise, Texas, shortly after Horner delivered a Christmas package containing Barbie dolls to the home.

Prosecutors Say Athena Was Abducted After Delivery

Investigators said Athena had gone outside following a disagreement at home when Horner encountered her near the property. Prosecutors argued that the 34-year-old kidnapped the child and later killed her inside his delivery vehicle.

Court testimony revealed that Horner initially lied to police, claiming he accidentally hit Athena with his van and panicked. However, evidence later contradicted that version of events.

Disturbing footage recovered from inside the FedEx vehicle reportedly showed Athena alive and physically unharmed after entering the van.

Chilling Evidence Presented in Court

During the trial, prosecutors described horrifying forensic findings and emotional testimony from investigators and family members. Authorities said Athena fought back during the attack, with Horner’s DNA discovered under her fingernails.

Prosecutors also revealed that his DNA was found in multiple locations on the child’s body and clothing, although no sexual assault charge was ultimately filed.

Wise County District Attorney James Stainton told jurors the case reflected “every parent’s worst nightmare.”

Killer’s Recorded Request Shocked Jurors

One of the most talked-about moments in court came from interrogation footage shown to jurors. Shortly after his arrest, Horner attempted to negotiate with investigators.

According to courtroom testimony, he asked police to allow him one month of freedom so he could spend Christmas with his son before fully confessing.

“If you give me a month with my family, I’ll tell you everything,” Horner reportedly told investigators. Authorities immediately rejected the request.

The footage quickly sparked outrage online as many viewers described the demand as cold and self-centered given the circumstances.

Defense Pointed to Mental Health and Autism Diagnosis

Horner’s legal team argued that his autism diagnosis, difficult upbringing, and long-term mental health struggles should be considered mitigating factors against the death penalty.

Defense attorneys claimed neurological and developmental issues may have contributed to his actions. Prosecutors strongly rejected that argument, telling jurors that millions of people face similar struggles without committing violent crimes.

They also argued Horner may have fantasized about carrying out the abduction before it happened.

Athena’s Family Delivers Emotional Statements

Athena’s family delivered heartbreaking victim impact statements following the sentencing. Her uncle, Elijah Strand, told Horner that Athena’s memory would outlive him forever.

“She was laughter, kindness and innocence,” he said in court. “She had dreams she’ll never get to chase.”

Athena’s mother, Maitlyn Gandy, also drew attention throughout the proceedings for wearing pink in tribute to her daughter’s bright personality. In a heartbreaking final gesture, she wore black on the day Horner received the death sentence.

Timeline of the Investigation

Athena disappeared on November 30, 2022, triggering a massive search effort involving hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement officers across Wise County.

Two days later, investigators located her body near Boyd, Texas, after Horner eventually admitted to killing her and directed authorities to the location.

After initially pleading not guilty, Horner changed his plea to guilty in April 2026, shifting the trial’s focus entirely to whether he should receive life in prison or the death penalty.

On May 5, 2026, jurors officially sentenced him to death by lethal injection.
