A travel safety expert has issued a strong warning to airline passengers about what they choose to wear on flights, specifically advising against one of the most common airport outfits.

According to aviation expert Christine Negroni, passengers should avoid wearing leggings on planes, even though they are widely considered comfortable for long journeys.

Negroni explains that the concern is not about fashion or comfort, but about safety in rare emergency situations.

She says that most aviation accidents, while uncommon, can involve fire during or after impact, and clothing choice could play a role in survival outcomes.

The main issue, according to her, is that many leggings are made from synthetic, petroleum-based materials, which can behave dangerously under extreme heat.

In a fire scenario, these materials may melt and stick to the skin, potentially causing more severe injuries compared to natural fabrics like cotton or wool.

Because of this risk, she advises passengers to choose natural fibers instead, as they are less likely to react in this way during extreme conditions.

Her guidance is part of a broader set of safety recommendations for air travel, including wearing sensible footwear and avoiding clothing that could restrict movement in an emergency evacuation.

The advice has been widely discussed online, especially as leggings remain one of the most popular “travel outfits” for comfort on long-haul flights.

While experts stress that serious in-flight emergencies are rare, they argue that passengers should still consider preparedness over convenience when choosing what to wear onboard.
