Newly released police bodycam footage has revealed the tense moments after the arrest of Mackenzie Shirilla, the Ohio woman convicted of intentionally causing a crash that killed her boyfriend and a friend in 2022.
The footage shows Shirilla’s father, Steve Shirilla, arriving at a police station after learning his daughter had been taken into custody. During a heated discussion with officers, he repeatedly expressed frustration over investigators speaking with her without his involvement.
“She’s a Dumb 18-Year-Old”
When officers explained that Mackenzie was legally an adult and could decide for herself whether to speak with investigators, Steve pushed back.
“Yeah, but she’s a dumb 18-year-old,” he responded, adding that she had only recently turned 18.
His wife, Natalie, quickly objected to the remark, telling him to stop calling their daughter dumb. Steve replied that “all the kids today are dumb” before continuing to argue that Mackenzie should not be questioned without legal representation.

Parents Wanted Lawyers Present
Throughout the exchange, Steve repeatedly insisted that attorneys had advised Mackenzie not to speak with police.
Bodycam footage shows him attempting to reach his daughter and tell her not to answer questions. Officers informed him that because she was an adult, she would need to personally invoke her constitutional rights and request legal counsel.
The conversation became increasingly tense as Steve questioned why police had arrested Mackenzie publicly instead of contacting the family first.
Case Back in the Spotlight
The footage surfaced following renewed interest in the case after the release of Netflix’s documentary The Crash, which revisits the events surrounding the fatal incident and features interviews with both the victims’ families and Mackenzie’s relatives.
Shirilla was convicted in 2023 of murdering her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan after prosecutors argued she intentionally drove her vehicle into a brick building at approximately 100 mph.
She was sentenced to two concurrent prison terms of 15 years to life.
Family Continues to Support Her
Despite the conviction, Mackenzie’s parents have remained vocal supporters of their daughter and continue to maintain that she deserves another chance.
Speaking recently about the Netflix documentary, Steve said he believed Mackenzie handled herself well during interviews and praised her maturity compared to when she was first arrested.
He also criticized filmmakers for including footage showing Mackenzie consulting with her attorney, arguing that it created a misleading impression that her responses were rehearsed.
Ongoing Debate Surrounds the Case
The case continues to generate strong reactions years after the crash, with supporters of the victims pointing to the court’s findings while others continue to question aspects of the prosecution’s theory.
The newly released bodycam footage offers another glimpse into the emotional aftermath of one of the most closely followed criminal cases in recent years, highlighting the family’s efforts to protect Mackenzie as investigators built their case.
Why the Story Still Resonates
Netflix’s documentary has introduced the case to a wider audience, sparking renewed debate over intent, accountability, and the challenges families face when tragedy and criminal allegations collide.
With fresh footage continuing to emerge, public interest in the case shows little sign of slowing down.
