Jared Padalecki has apologized after a message expressing support for Perez Hilton following the blogger’s hospitalization triggered criticism online.
The Supernatural star initially reached out to Hilton after learning about his serious health crisis. Padalecki wrote that Hilton was in his thoughts and reflected on the difficult and unpredictable nature of being human.
The message quickly drew criticism from people who pointed to Hilton’s controversial history as a celebrity blogger. Padalecki subsequently deleted the original post and acknowledged that he had been unaware of the extent of Hilton’s past behavior.
Padalecki Explains What Happened
Padalecki later returned with a longer explanation, saying he had heard of Hilton and knew the blogger had not always been kind toward him. However, he said he had never followed Hilton’s website or looked deeply into his history.
The actor explained that his instinct had been to offer compassion rather than hold a grudge. He said he believed in giving people grace and forgiveness, but acknowledged that he did not know enough about Hilton’s past when he initially posted his message.
Padalecki made clear that his comments were not intended to endorse Hilton’s previous actions. He apologized to anyone who felt hurt by his words and said he regretted speaking without knowing the full context.
Why the Message Became So Controversial
Hilton became one of the most recognizable celebrity gossip bloggers of the 2000s, developing a reputation for aggressive coverage of celebrities and controversial personal commentary. He has since acknowledged that some of his behavior from that period went too far.
In his 2020 memoir, TMI: My Life in Scandal, Hilton wrote about regretting the way he treated people during the height of his fame and said he had apologized to numerous people he had hurt.
Padalecki’s situation highlights an uncomfortable distinction between showing compassion for someone experiencing a crisis and approving of their past behavior. His explanation suggests that he was responding to a person in distress rather than attempting to defend Hilton’s history.
Hilton remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition, according to his family, who said he experienced significant blood loss and suffered additional injuries requiring surgery. His family has also asked for privacy while he undergoes treatment and begins what they describe as a long recovery.
Padalecki has now made his position clear: his original message was intended as an expression of humanity, not an endorsement of Hilton’s past. The episode nevertheless shows how quickly a public gesture of sympathy can become controversial when the history between two public figures is complicated.
