Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther 3, revealing that David Jonsson will lead the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise as Prince T’Challa II, the son of the late King T’Challa.
The announcement was made during Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con, where it was also confirmed that the film will arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028. The story will follow T’Challa’s son as he comes of age after first appearing as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Director Ryan Coogler is returning to helm the third installment, while Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri alongside Winston Duke, who returns as M’Baku. Wright became the Black Panther in the previous film following the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020.
Jonsson joins the franchise after earning praise for his performances in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk. His casting marks the beginning of a new era for Wakanda as Marvel shifts its focus to the next generation of heroes.
The original Black Panther became a global phenomenon after its 2018 release, earning more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and becoming the first superhero film ever nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Its 2022 sequel also proved to be a massive success, grossing nearly $860 million worldwide.
Before Black Panther 3 arrives, fans will see Letitia Wright return as Shuri in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, setting the stage for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
