Canadian actor Stewart McLean has been found dead days after he was reported missing, as authorities continue investigating the case as a possible homicide.
McLean, 45, was last seen on May 15 at his residence in Lions Bay, British Columbia. Police confirmed Friday that his remains were later discovered in the Lions Bay area following an extensive search effort.
Investigation now focused on homicide
Canada’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed the discovery in a public statement, one day after investigators revealed they believed McLean may have been the victim of homicide.
Authorities said investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and working to build a timeline of McLean’s movements before his disappearance.
“As the investigation continues to unfold, homicide investigators are working to collect and analyze evidence, review CCTV footage and conduct interviews,” IHIT Cpl. Esther Tupper said in a statement.
Officials added that they are pursuing all available leads as they search for answers surrounding the actor’s death.
Missing person report sparked search
The Squamish Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a missing persons report on May 18 after concerns were raised about McLean’s whereabouts.
Investigators said police agencies and emergency personnel had been actively searching for him from the earliest stages of the investigation.
Authorities currently believe the incident to be isolated and said there is no broader threat to the public at this time.
Tributes from colleagues and friends
Following confirmation of his death, tributes quickly emerged from colleagues and members of the entertainment industry.
Talent agency Lucas Talent Inc. shared an emotional statement from agent Jodi Caplan, who said she had worked with McLean for more than a decade.
“He was always such a pleasure to deal with — dedicated, professional, eager, and endlessly funny,” the statement read.
Many casting directors and industry figures reportedly contacted the agency to express condolences and share memories of working with the actor.
Career in television
McLean appeared in several well-known television productions throughout his acting career, including roles in Virgin River, Arrow, Happy Face, and Murder in a Small Town.
Though often appearing in supporting roles, colleagues described him as a respected and well-liked presence within the Canadian television industry.
Investigation ongoing
Police have not publicly released details surrounding a possible suspect or cause of death as the investigation continues.
Authorities are asking anyone with information connected to McLean’s activities before May 15 to come forward.
