Music Legend Opens Up About His Long Road to Recovery

Phil Collins has revealed that he came close to losing his life during a serious health crisis, saying his family was called to his bedside after doctors feared he might not survive. The legendary singer shared that the medical emergency followed years of struggling with alcohol addiction.

According to Collins, he was hospitalized in late 2023 because of complications related to heavy drinking. After briefly being discharged, he was readmitted to intensive care, where he remained hospitalized for several months.

Family Was Told to Prepare for the Worst

In a recent interview, Collins said his condition became so severe that doctors discussed end-of-life decisions with his family. He explained that his kidneys and other organs began to fail, prompting loved ones to gather in case they were seeing him for the last time.

The singer admitted he has little memory of that period, saying he was unaware that family members had been told to say their goodbyes while he fought for his life.

A Turning Point

Collins described his recovery as nothing short of fortunate and said the experience permanently changed his relationship with alcohol.

He revealed that he has not had a drink since the medical emergency, calling himself “very lucky” to have survived. The singer has previously spoken about his battle with alcohol, including in his 2016 autobiography, where he detailed how addiction affected his personal life.

Ongoing Health Challenges

In addition to his recovery from alcohol-related complications, Collins continues to manage several chronic health conditions. Over the years, he has spoken publicly about nerve damage, mobility problems, type 2 diabetes, and other issues that have limited his ability to perform.

He now receives daily assistance from a nurse and regularly works with a physiotherapist to help maintain his mobility and overall health.

Cherishing Time With Family

Following his recovery, Collins said one of the most meaningful moments was reuniting with his children. He recalled spending several days together with his family, describing the experience as deeply emotional after everyone had feared the worst.

The singer said those moments reminded him how precious life is and reinforced the importance of his recovery journey. While he continues to face health challenges, Collins says he is grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with the people he loves.
