For more than a year, Sadie Sink had to keep one of Marvel’s biggest secrets to herself. Now that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters, the Stranger Things star can finally reveal that she plays Jean Grey, one of the most important mutants in Marvel history.
Sink says she knew very little about Jean before Marvel approached her. Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito explained the character and her role in the film, prompting Sink to dive into the comics and previous adaptations. She quickly realized why the role was such a major opportunity.
The secrecy surrounding her casting was intense. Her character was given a code name, and even while promoting the movie alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya, Sink had to carefully avoid confirming the identity fans had been speculating about for months.
The secret was eventually revealed at the world premiere, when musician Steve Lacy referred to Sink’s character as Jean during a live red-carpet interview. Sink says she was actually relieved by the accidental reveal because it finally allowed her to talk openly about the role.
A Different Jean Grey
Sink’s version of Jean is deliberately different from the portrayals played by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner. Rather than approaching Jean as a traditional superhero villain, Sink focused on a young woman dealing with grief, anger and trauma.
According to Sink, director Destin Daniel Cretton wanted the character’s emotional pain to remain at the center of the performance. Jean’s actions may make her appear threatening, but Sink sees her as someone who has been hurt and is struggling to understand what has happened to her.
That approach becomes especially important in Jean’s scenes with Peter Parker, where the characters recognize something familiar in each other’s loneliness. Sink believes those moments reveal that Jean is not simply evil, but someone desperately searching for connection after losing the person she loved.
What Comes Next for Jean?
Sink has already discussed the future of Jean with X-Men director Jake Schreier, although she says she does not know all the details of what comes next. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has also indicated that Sink’s character will have significant importance in the MCU’s future.
The timing makes Jean’s introduction particularly significant. Marvel is developing a new X-Men film under Schreier, and Sink has expressed excitement about becoming part of what she describes as an ensemble. For now, however, she is keeping quiet about exactly how many Marvel projects remain in her future.
What makes Sink’s casting especially interesting is that Marvel is introducing Jean Grey through Spider-Man, rather than waiting for the standalone X-Men movie. That gives audiences a chance to understand Jean as a person before she becomes part of a much larger mutant story, potentially making her eventual place among the X-Men more emotionally meaningful.
