President Donald Trump reportedly urged FIFA to review the one-match suspension handed to U.S. Men’s National Team striker Folarin Balogun before the governing body made the unprecedented decision to allow him to play.
According to reports from The New York Times and sports journalist Ben Jacobs, Trump contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after Balogun received a red card during the United States’ 2-0 World Cup victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
FIFA Makes Rare Decision
Balogun had automatically been suspended for one match after being sent off during Wednesday’s game, a punishment that is typically mandatory and not subject to appeal.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension would instead be placed on probation for one year, making the striker immediately eligible to face Belgium in Monday’s Round of 16 clash in Seattle.
The organization said the automatic suspension would be “suspended for a probationary period of one year,” marking what reports describe as the first reversal of its kind during a World Cup in more than six decades.
Trump Praises FIFA
Following the announcement, Trump welcomed FIFA’s decision on Truth Social.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” the president wrote.
While the White House has not publicly confirmed Trump’s involvement, multiple reports say he personally asked Infantino to review the suspension.
Belgium Questions the Decision
The move has drawn criticism from Belgium ahead of its knockout match against the United States.
The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision, arguing that it appears to conflict with the organization’s own disciplinary rules.
Officials added they are exploring all available options in response.
Close Relationship With FIFA
Trump has maintained a close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, particularly as the United States co-hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
The two have appeared together at several FIFA events, including last year’s FIFA Club World Cup final, where Trump joined Infantino in presenting the championship trophy after Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain.
Financial disclosure documents released recently also showed Infantino provided Trump with tickets to the Club World Cup final.
High Stakes Match Ahead
Balogun has been one of the United States’ standout performers at the tournament, scoring three goals in as many appearances.
His availability gives the U.S. a significant boost ahead of Monday night’s Round of 16 showdown against Belgium, with the winner advancing to face either Portugal or Spain in the quarterfinals.
FIFA has not publicly explained why Balogun’s automatic suspension was overturned, making the decision one of the tournament’s most controversial moments so far.
