Jake Gyllenhaal once admitted that filming romantic scenes with Jennifer Aniston felt like “torture,” but not for the reason many people might assume.
The actor made the comments while discussing his role opposite Aniston in the 2002 romantic drama The Good Girl, a film that paired the rising young star with one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses.
Working Alongside Jennifer Aniston
In The Good Girl, Aniston played Justine, a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage who develops a complicated relationship with a younger coworker, played by Gyllenhaal.

The film received positive reviews and remains one of Aniston’s most acclaimed dramatic performances outside of her sitcom success on Friends.
For Gyllenhaal, however, some moments on set proved especially challenging.
Why He Called It “Torture”
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Gyllenhaal was asked what it was like filming intimate scenes with Aniston.
“Oh yeah, it was torture,” he joked before quickly clarifying that it wasn’t entirely a bad experience.
The actor explained that romantic scenes can be surprisingly awkward because dozens of crew members are often standing nearby watching every movement.
Rather than feeling spontaneous, he described such scenes as highly choreographed and technical, comparing them to filming fight sequences where every action must be carefully planned for the camera.
The Famous “Pillow Technique”
Gyllenhaal also revealed that a practical method known as the “pillow technique” was used during filming.
The technique involves placing a pillow between actors during intimate scenes to maintain comfort and personal boundaries while creating the illusion of physical closeness on screen.
According to Gyllenhaal, the idea came from Aniston herself, whom he praised for being thoughtful and considerate throughout the production.
He recalled that she suggested using the pillow before filming began, helping make potentially uncomfortable scenes easier for everyone involved.
A Longtime Crush Made Things Harder
What truly made the experience difficult, Gyllenhaal later admitted, was the fact that he had a longstanding crush on Aniston before they ever worked together.
Speaking in a separate interview, he revealed that he had admired her for years and found it intimidating to suddenly be acting alongside someone he had looked up to for so long.
At the time, Aniston was already an established television and film star, while Gyllenhaal was still building his Hollywood career.
Jennifer Aniston’s Response
Years later, Aniston was asked about Gyllenhaal’s confession during an interview.
Laughing at the revelation, she responded warmly and affectionately, saying, “I love that boy.”
Her reaction only added to fans’ appreciation of the friendship and mutual respect the two actors have maintained since filming together more than two decades ago.
A Hollywood Story Fans Still Love
Although Gyllenhaal’s “torture” comment often resurfaces online, the full story paints a much different picture.
Rather than describing a negative experience, the actor was referring to the awkwardness of filming intimate scenes under studio lights while working alongside someone he had admired for years.
More than 20 years later, the behind-the-scenes story remains one of Hollywood’s most charming celebrity crush confessions.
