Tributes are flooding social media after a 38-year-old diver died following a devastating shark attack off the coast of Western Australia.
Steven Mattaboni, known to friends as “Mattas,” was reportedly spearfishing near Horseshoe Reef close to Rottnest Island when the attack occurred.
Attack Happened During Spearfishing Trip
According to local authorities, Mattaboni had been in the water with friends on Saturday morning when the incident unfolded.
Police said the diver was around 20 meters away from the boat when he was believed to have been attacked by a roughly 13-foot great white shark.
Witnesses reportedly pulled him from the water and rushed him back to shore for emergency treatment.
He Later Died From His Injuries
Emergency responders met the group upon arrival, but Mattaboni later died from severe injuries to both lower legs.
Authorities described the scene as traumatic for everyone involved, particularly the victim’s friends who witnessed the attack firsthand.
Police later confirmed that despite rescue efforts, he could not be revived.
Wife Shares Emotional Tribute
Mattaboni’s wife, Shirlene, later shared an emotional tribute describing him as a loving father and devoted family man.
She said the ocean had always been a huge part of his life and described him as fiercely loyal, generous, and deeply loved by those around him.
The couple shared two young daughters, including a baby only a few months old.
Community Mourns Popular Local Figure
Tributes also poured in from friends, teammates, and local organizations following news of his death.
Kingsley Football Club described Mattaboni as one of the most genuine people anyone could meet.
Many remembered his warm personality, sense of humor, and strong presence within the local community.
Shark Attacks Remain Rare but Devastating
Australia records some of the world’s highest numbers of shark encounters due to its extensive coastline and active ocean culture.
However, fatal shark attacks remain relatively rare considering the number of people entering the water each year.
Great white sharks are among the largest predatory fish in the world and are commonly found in waters surrounding parts of Australia.
Authorities Urge Caution in the Area
Following the incident, local authorities advised beachgoers and divers to remain alert and report any shark sightings immediately.
Officials are continuing to monitor activity around the area while supporting those affected by the tragedy.
The incident has once again sparked discussion around ocean safety and the risks faced by divers and spearfishers.
Friends Say He Died Doing What He Loved
Many tributes focused on Mattaboni’s passion for the ocean and his love of fishing and diving.
Friends described him as someone who felt most at peace in the water and said he lived life with generosity and enthusiasm.
For those who knew him, the loss has left an enormous emotional impact on both his family and the wider community.
