Catherine, Princess of Wales has continued her gradual return to public life after announcing that she is now in remission from cancer following nearly a year of treatment and recovery.
The Princess of Wales first revealed her diagnosis in March 2024 after undergoing major abdominal surgery earlier that year. In an emotional video message at the time, she explained that doctors initially believed her condition was non-cancerous before further testing discovered cancer had been present.
Shock diagnosis after surgery
Kate underwent surgery at The London Clinic in London in January 2024 and spent nearly two weeks recovering before returning home to Windsor.
After post-operative testing revealed cancer, doctors advised her to begin preventative chemotherapy treatment.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” Kate said in her public statement.
“However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.”
The royal family did not publicly disclose the specific type of cancer, emphasizing her right to medical privacy.
Chemotherapy and private family struggle
Kate later described the diagnosis as an incredibly difficult period for her family, particularly as she and Prince William, Prince of Wales worked to explain the situation to their children privately.
“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family,” she said at the time.
She began preventative chemotherapy shortly after her diagnosis and largely stepped away from public royal duties throughout much of 2024 while focusing on treatment and recovery.
Prince William praises her resilience
In a May 2026 radio appearance, Prince William reflected on his wife’s recovery and praised her strength throughout the ordeal.
“She’s an amazing mum, an amazing wife, and, literally, our family couldn’t cope without her,” he said.
“She’s been absolutely stunning, brilliant.”
William added that he was “very, very proud” of how she handled the past several years.
Completing treatment and returning to royal life
Kate announced in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy treatment, though she acknowledged that recovery would continue long afterward.
“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus,” she said in another public message.
“Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long.”
She gradually resumed royal engagements later that year, including public appearances for Remembrance events and her annual Together at Christmas carol service.
Remission announcement
In January 2025, Kate publicly confirmed that she was officially in remission.
“It is a relief to now be in remission, and I remain focused on recovery,” she wrote on social media.
“As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”
Since then, the princess has continued speaking openly about the emotional and physical realities of cancer recovery, including moments of fear, exhaustion, and resilience.
Continuing recovery journey
Kate has since returned to more regular public duties, including overseas engagements. During a May 2026 visit to Italy, royal aides described the trip as an important milestone in her recovery journey.
Supporters and royal watchers have praised her openness throughout the health crisis, with many noting that her willingness to discuss treatment and recovery has resonated deeply with cancer patients around the world.
