Brian Austin Green is opening up about the biggest lesson he learned after the end of his marriage to Megan Fox, revealing that therapy completely changed the way he approaches relationships.
The actor said his divorce pushed him to rethink what truly matters in a partner, leading him to build a much stronger relationship with his fiancée, Sharna Burgess.
Green Says Therapy Changed His Perspective
Speaking on the I Do, Part 2 podcast, Green reflected on his nearly 15-year relationship with Fox, admitting that he once prioritized physical attraction above everything else.
He explained that many of his past relationships began with chemistry first, while the emotional connection came later. But after his marriage ended, he realized he didn’t want to repeat the same patterns.
Green said he spent considerable time in therapy, examining what he contributed to relationships and what he wanted to change moving forward.
Friendship Became the Foundation
That new mindset shaped the beginning of his relationship with Sharna Burgess.
Green said the pair first connected through long conversations, spending hours talking before their relationship became romantic. He believes becoming genuine friends first created a stronger and healthier bond.
According to Green, starting with friendship removes much of the uncertainty because both people are already comfortable being honest with each other.
Putting Everything on the Table
The actor shared that he and Burgess were unusually open from the start, discussing both their strengths and flaws before fully committing to the relationship.
That level of honesty, he said, helped them realize they worked well together beyond physical attraction and gave them confidence that their relationship had a solid foundation.
Green added that relationships built mainly on attraction can fade once the initial excitement wears off if there isn’t a deeper connection underneath.
Both Have Moved On
Green and Fox first met while filming Hope & Faith in 2004 and married in 2010. They share three sons before finalizing their divorce in 2021.
Today, Green is engaged to Burgess, and the couple share a son together. Fox has also moved forward with her life and welcomed daughter Saga Blade with Machine Gun Kelly.
Reflecting on his journey, Green said openness and friendship have become the cornerstones of the relationship he has today.
