Journalist Laura Tingle, who was in a relationship with Neill from 2018 to 2021, said the actor had been “pretty sick” during the last couple of weeks of his life. She explained that although he had overcome his blood cancer, years of chemotherapy and immunotherapy had left his immune system significantly weakened.

Tingle said Neill’s body had become exhausted after years of treatment, making it increasingly difficult for him to recover from further illness. Several Australian media outlets have reported that pneumonia was the immediate cause of death, although the family has not publicly released an official medical cause.

Neill publicly revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. Earlier this year, he shared the encouraging news that his treatment had successfully placed the disease into remission after a newer therapy proved effective when chemotherapy alone was no longer working.
