Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax’s wife, Cerina Fairfax, had installed several security cameras in their residence prior to the tragic events on Thursday, which authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide. Police believe that Justin Fairfax fatally shot Cerina before taking his own life at their Annandale, Virginia home.
The couple was reportedly undergoing a contentious divorce. During this period, Cerina installed multiple surveillance cameras inside the shared home. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that law enforcement first became aware of these cameras in January, when the footage was used to challenge allegations made by Justin Fairfax reporting that Cerina had assaulted him.
These same recorded images are now aiding investigators in piecing together the details of Thursday’s shooting. Although separated, the couple had been living together in the same house. Police documents and statements confirm this living arrangement and also reveal that legal papers had recently been served to Justin Fairfax, possibly related to their divorce proceedings.
Chief Davis commented, “I know he was served some paperwork recently. Apparently, the paperwork indicated when he was next to appear in court. That may have been a spark and detectives will figure that out that led to this tragedy here.”
The Fairfaxes share two children, Cameron, born in 2009, and Carys, born in 2011, who were reportedly present during the incident. The authorities are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the event.
