Comedian says family trips are not “a free-for-all”
Chelsea Handler is making one thing clear: if you’re invited on vacation with her, there are rules.
The comedian recently shared a list of expectations for family members joining her on trips, explaining that she created the guidelines after feeling “embarrassed and taken advantage of” during previous vacations she paid for.

Respect everyone, including the staff
One of Handler’s biggest rules is treating everyone with kindness.
She asks family members to greet housekeepers, delivery drivers and other staff working at the home, saying simple acknowledgment and basic respect should never be overlooked.
Pitch in and clean up after yourself
Handler also expects guests to help keep things running smoothly.
Her rules include clearing your own dishes, loading the dishwasher, avoiding excessive drinking and waiting until everyone has been served before going back for seconds.
She also joked that if someone finishes a pitcher of margaritas, they should be prepared to make another.
Put the phones away and enjoy family time
Another important rule is being present.
Handler encourages everyone, especially younger relatives, to set aside their phones and video games during family dinners, movie nights and games.
She says some of her favorite vacation memories came from everyone simply spending time together without distractions.
Everyone should bring something positive
While Handler pays for many of the trips, she says guests are still expected to contribute.
She explained that contribution doesn’t have to be financial. Instead, she wants everyone to bring a positive attitude and help create a fun atmosphere.
“It is not a free-for-all,” she wrote, adding that family may not always be easy, but they’re still worth making an effort for.
She now vacations with adults and kids separately
Handler later revealed she has found a solution that works even better.
Rather than taking everyone together, she now plans separate vacations for the adults and the children, allowing each group to relax and enjoy the trip in its own way.
