Sony announces plans to restore the legendary theater
One of Hollywood’s most recognizable movie landmarks is officially making a comeback.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced plans to restore the iconic Cinerama Dome, which has remained closed since 2020. The historic theater is expected to reopen in 2028, bringing one of Los Angeles’ most beloved cinemas back to life.
A new Alamo Drafthouse will open next door
As part of the project, Sony will also reopen the neighboring 14-screen ArcLight theater complex, transforming it into a new Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
The venue will feature the chain’s popular dine-in movie experience while preserving premium formats, including 35mm film projection and 70mm auditoriums for special screenings.
The Dome’s historic identity will remain intact
Although Alamo Drafthouse will operate the theaters, Sony says the Cinerama Dome’s famous appearance and legacy will be carefully protected.
The iconic “Cinerama” name and the building’s distinctive exterior will remain unchanged. Unlike the neighboring theaters, the Dome itself will not become a dine-in cinema.
Instead, it will continue hosting movie premieres, classic film screenings, filmmaker events and other special presentations.
A Hollywood landmark since 1963
The Cinerama Dome first opened its doors in 1963 and quickly became one of Los Angeles’ most famous theaters thanks to its massive curved screen and unforgettable architecture.
Over the decades, it hosted countless blockbuster premieres and became a favorite destination for filmmakers and movie fans alike before closing during the pandemic.
Restoration begins soon
Renovation work is expected to begin next month and continue through 2028.
Sony says the goal is not only to preserve the theater’s rich history but also ensure it remains a premier movie destination for future generations.
