Search Ends in Heartbreak

New details have been released following the death of former Alaskan Bush People star Matt Brown, whose body was found after a search along Washington state’s Okanogan River.

The tragic discovery came days after concerns were raised about Brown’s whereabouts, prompting search efforts involving both authorities and private citizens.

According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, the search began after a witness made a troubling 911 call on May 27 near Oroville, Washington.

The caller reportedly told dispatchers that he had spoken with a man sitting in shallow water along the river. Moments later, after briefly looking away, he heard a sound and turned back to see the man face down in the water and drifting away with the current.

Emergency responders, including law enforcement, fire crews, and medical personnel, rushed to the scene but were unable to locate the individual.

Challenging Conditions Hampered Rescue Efforts

Authorities launched an extensive search involving deputies, boats, jet ski-style watercraft, divers, drones, and assistance from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials later revealed that a firearm was recovered from the water near the area where the man was last seen.

Search crews continued working until dark and resumed efforts the following day. However, elevated runoff, strong currents, debris, poor visibility, and severe weather conditions made the operation increasingly difficult. The search was eventually suspended before private citizens continued looking along the river.

Body Found in River

According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, a group of private citizens located a deceased individual in the river on May 30. The person was later positively identified as Matthew Brown.

Officials confirmed that Brown’s body has been transferred to the Okanogan County Coroner’s Office, which will determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities have not released additional details while the investigation remains ongoing.

Brother Shares Emotional Update

Brown’s brother, Bear Brown, confirmed the devastating news in a video shared on social media.

Bear revealed that their brother Noah was among those involved in recovering Matt’s body and helped identify him.

“They found a body in the river a few hours ago and it was positively identified as being Matt,” Bear said.

He also shared that Noah helped pull the body from the water and was the family member who identified him.

Bear Speaks About Matt’s Struggles

In his emotional message, Bear reflected on his brother’s long battle with personal challenges, including reported struggles with alcohol and drug addiction.

While emphasizing that the coroner’s findings are still pending, Bear admitted he never expected his brother would intentionally harm himself.

“I would’ve never thought that Matt would hurt himself,” Bear said, adding that it appeared the injury may have been self-inflicted, though authorities have not confirmed any official findings.

Bear also asked fans to remain respectful and avoid speculation while the family grieves.

Family Pays Tribute

In a statement released after the tragedy, the Brown family remembered Matt as far more than a television personality.

They described him as intelligent, creative, adventurous, and deeply curious about the world around him. The family also highlighted his love for the outdoors, fishing, boating, and sharing knowledge with others.

“To millions of viewers, Matt was known as one of the original stars of Alaskan Bush People. To us, he was so much more,” the family said.

Remembered for His Passion and Curiosity

According to his family, Matt possessed an extraordinary mind and was constantly exploring new ideas and interests.

They said those closest to him knew him as a compassionate person who generously gave his time and genuinely wanted to help others whenever he could.

The family also praised his skills as a fisherman and boatman, noting that he felt most at home on the water and in the wilderness.

Family Estrangement and Recent Concerns

Reports have also renewed attention on Matt’s complicated relationship with his family in recent years.

According to reports, many members of the Brown family had become estranged from Matt amid concerns about his alleged substance abuse struggles. Sources claimed that most relatives had cut ties with him several years ago, although his brother Gabe reportedly remained in occasional contact.

TMZ reported that Gabe was seen speaking with investigators near the area where Matt was believed to have last been seen alive.

One of the Original Stars

Matt was one of the original members of the Brown family featured on Alaskan Bush People, which aired for 14 seasons and followed the family’s unconventional lifestyle.

Over the years, viewers watched the Browns navigate life in remote wilderness settings, making Matt a familiar face to millions of fans.

While authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, tributes from family, friends, and viewers continue to pour in.

The Okanogan County Coroner has not yet released an official cause or manner of death.
