Reddit users were left disturbed after photos showing a bizarre object emerging from a bathroom ceiling went viral online.
The post, shared in Reddit’s “What Is It?” community, showed a dark growth slowly protruding through a ceiling crack over roughly 24 hours, immediately triggering theories ranging from rodents to insects and even horror movie comparisons.

Internet Users Think It Was Fungal Growth
While early guesses varied wildly, many commenters eventually concluded the object was likely a mushroom or fungal growth caused by severe water damage behind the ceiling.
Several users explained that visible mushrooms are often only the “fruiting body,” meaning a much larger fungal network could already be spreading unseen inside the walls or ceiling.
One user said: “The only way this is happening is severe water damage from where it is fruiting.”
Another redditor commented: “Where a mushroom can grow that large through your ceiling, the chances of other dangerous molds in the ceiling and walls is significant.”
And another warned: “The mushrooms are just the bit you can see. The mycelium will be much bigger.”
Experts Say Moisture Is Usually the Real Problem
Home and mold experts note that mushrooms growing indoors are usually linked to long-term moisture problems, leaks, or poor ventilation. Bathrooms are particularly vulnerable because trapped humidity can soak drywall and wood over time.
The viral post also sparked concern because fungal growth emerging visibly through ceilings can indicate advanced decay hidden beneath the surface.
