James Handy, the veteran character actor known for roles in films including Top Gun: Maverick and Jumanji, has died after being stabbed at his Los Angeles home, according to police. He was 81.
Authorities say the actor was discovered suffering from a stab wound outside his residence in the Tarzana neighborhood on Wednesday morning.
Inside the Chilling 911 Call Before James Handy Was Found
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to the home around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a disturbing 911 call connected to the incident.
Police said the caller allegedly told dispatchers:
“I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Handy unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to his chest.
He was transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics but was later pronounced dead.
Suspect Arrested at the Scene
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who authorities say is the son of Handy’s girlfriend.
According to investigators, Gledhill allegedly approached responding officers himself and admitted he was the person they were searching for.
Authorities say the suspect lived at the residence with his mother, who was reportedly in a relationship with Handy.
Gledhill was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. Bail was reportedly set at $2 million.
Police Say Incident Appears Isolated
Investigators stated they do not believe the public is in danger.
“Detectives believe this is an isolated incident,” the LAPD said in a statement.
A motive behind the fatal stabbing has not yet been confirmed.
Longtime Character Actor Appeared in Nearly 150 Productions
Handy built a lengthy Hollywood career spanning decades, becoming one of television and film’s most recognizable character actors.
He first appeared onscreen in the 1977 film “Taps” before going on to appear in dozens of major productions over the years.
His credits included appearances in:
- “Unbreakable”
- “Logan”
- “Law & Order”
- “The X-Files”
- “Alias”
More recently, he played bartender Jimmy in the blockbuster sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” alongside Tom Cruise.
