According to sleep medicine specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, regularly sleeping with your arms bent and tucked close to your chest, often called the “T-Rex position,” could lead to nerve compression and other health issues if it becomes a long-term habit.

Why the Position Can Be Problematic

When your arms remain bent for hours during sleep, pressure can build on nerves located in the elbows and wrists. This may restrict blood flow and lead to numbness, tingling, or discomfort in the arms and hands.

While many people occasionally wake up with a “dead arm,” experts say repeated pressure night after night can create more serious problems over time.

Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Dr. Dasgupta warns that persistent numbness, weakness, or tingling sensations may indicate that nerves are being compressed during sleep.

Other warning signs can include shooting pain down the arm, difficulty gripping objects, or frequently dropping items such as phones, cups, or keys. If these symptoms continue after waking or occur regularly, medical advice should be sought.

Similar to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Experts note that prolonged nerve compression can contribute to symptoms that resemble carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that affects the hands and wrists and can cause pain, weakness, and numbness.

Although occasional symptoms are usually temporary, repeated pressure over weeks or months may increase the risk of longer-lasting nerve irritation.

According to Dr. Dasgupta, most cases improve once a person changes their sleeping position. However, chronic pressure on nerves over extended periods could potentially lead to lasting damage if left unaddressed.

This is why sleep specialists recommend paying attention to recurring symptoms rather than dismissing them as normal discomfort.

How to Avoid the Problem

Changing a lifelong sleeping habit can be difficult, but experts suggest several simple adjustments. Using a body pillow can help keep the arms in a more neutral position throughout the night.

Some specialists also recommend loosely wrapping a towel or soft bandage around the elbow to discourage excessive bending while sleeping.
