Donald Trump faced backlash online after appearing to fall asleep while attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

The president, 79, attended the New York Knicks’ first home Finals game since 1999, but videos circulating on social media appeared to show him resting his eyes during the matchup against the San Antonio Spurs.

Crowd Reaction at Madison Square Garden

Trump’s arrival at Madison Square Garden was also met with loud boos from sections of the crowd, although he later insisted reporters mostly greeted him with “cheers” and enthusiasm.

The game itself drew huge attention, with ticket prices reaching record highs as Knicks fans packed the arena hoping to see their team continue its playoff run. Instead, the Spurs secured a 115-111 victory.

Heavy Security Measures Across NYC

Trump’s attendance triggered intense security measures across Manhattan, including road closures, fencing, canceled fan watch parties, and airport-style screening around the arena. Even players reportedly underwent additional security checks before entering the venue.

Political and Public Criticism

Several political figures and commentators criticized the disruptions caused by the visit. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reacted to the viral clip by posting: “WAKE TF UP.”

The White House strongly denied claims that Trump had fallen asleep, with spokesperson Davis Ingle insisting the president “watched every moment” of the game and dismissing critics.

Trump Responds to Critics

After the game, Trump also fired back at ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, who had called the visit “selfish” and “narcissistic,” by saying he didn’t think Smith had “a high IQ.”
