Authorities in Omaha, Nebraska have released new details following a deadly police shooting that unfolded after a violent attack on a young child outside a Walmart store.

The incident, which began on a routine Tuesday morning, escalated into a life-threatening situation involving an attempted kidnapping, a knife attack, and ultimately a fatal police response that has since sparked public debate.

What Happened Inside the Walmart

According to police, the suspect — identified as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman — allegedly took a knife from inside the Walmart before approaching a woman and her three-year-old son, who were unknown to her.

Authorities say she then forced them through the store and into the parking lot while holding the weapon.

Deputy Chief Scott Gray described the situation as an attempted kidnapping, stating the suspect had effectively “taken possession of the child” and placed him in a shopping cart while continuing to threaten both victims.

Witnesses alerted police as the situation escalated rapidly.

Police Confrontation Turns Fatal

When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with a highly volatile situation.

Police say Guzman ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and continued to threaten the child. Bodycam footage reportedly shows officers attempting to de-escalate the situation before it turned critical.

Authorities state that the suspect then began moving the knife toward the child and ultimately inflicted a facial injury.

Officers opened fire shortly after, fatally shooting Guzman at the scene.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer later defended the officers’ response, stating they acted to prevent further harm to the child.

Child Injured but Expected to Recover

The child, identified as Cyler Hillman, was rushed to hospital with a facial laceration and a hand injury. Despite the severity of the attack, doctors confirmed he is expected to survive.

His parents described the experience as terrifying but credited police with saving his life.

“If they wouldn’t have reacted when they did, we wouldn’t still have him,” his father said.

Family Describes Emotional Aftermath

Cyler’s parents, Sara and Casey Hillman, have spoken about the emotional impact of the incident and the difficult recovery process ahead.

While relieved their son survived, they said the experience has left lasting emotional scars.

Casey described the moment he first saw his son after the attack, saying the child remained remarkably calm despite his injuries.

However, he also noted that Cyler later became fearful, saying he no longer wanted to go outside after what happened.

Investigation and Police Response

Authorities have confirmed that Guzman had a history of mental health issues and prior violent incidents, though her motive in this case remains under investigation.

Police have released bodycam footage as part of the ongoing review, stating that officers issued multiple commands before using lethal force.

The Omaha Police Department maintains that the response was necessary due to an immediate threat to the child’s life.

City officials, including the mayor, have publicly supported the officers’ actions.

Questions Over Security and Prevention

While many have praised the police response, the incident has also raised questions about how the situation escalated inside the store.

The child’s father questioned how the suspect was able to access a knife and move through the store without earlier intervention.

Walmart has said it is cooperating fully with investigators and condemned the violence.

Wider Conversation

The case has reignited discussion around mental health intervention, public safety, and crisis response in high-traffic public spaces.

The child’s mother urged greater awareness and willingness to intervene when someone appears to be in distress.

“People need to be more willing to help people in a mental health crisis,” she said.

A Family Focused on Recovery

Despite the trauma, the Hillman family says their focus is now on recovery and helping Cyler return to normal life.

He is now back home, spending time with family and slowly resuming everyday activities.

For his parents, the outcome is both painful and deeply grateful.

“In a matter of centimetres or inches,” his father said, “this could have been a completely different story.”
