Melat Kiros has defeated longtime U.S. Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado’s Democratic primary, marking one of the most closely watched progressive victories of the 2026 election cycle.

Major Upset in Colorado

With most ballots counted, Kiros held a clear lead over DeGette, who had represented the Denver-area district for 15 terms. The victory ends DeGette’s decades-long tenure in Congress and signals continued momentum for progressive candidates within the Democratic Party.

Because the district strongly favors Democrats, Kiros is widely expected to enter November’s general election as the frontrunner.

Progressive Platform Energized Voters

The 29-year-old former attorney campaigned on a progressive platform that included calls for economic reform and sharp criticism of Democratic leaders over U.S. policy toward Israel and the war in Gaza. Kiros has described Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as genocide, a characterization rejected by Israel.

Her campaign also drew attention for its association with left-wing political commentator Hasan Piker, making the race a focal point in the broader debate over the Democratic Party’s future direction.

Another Win for the Democratic Left

Kiros’ victory follows several recent primary wins by progressive and democratic socialist-backed candidates across the country, adding to signs that left-leaning candidates continue to gain influence in Democratic primaries.

The result is likely to intensify discussions within the party over its priorities ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, particularly on issues such as foreign policy, healthcare, and economic inequality.

Other Colorado Primary Results

Colorado voters also selected Attorney General Phil Weiser as the Democratic nominee for governor after he defeated U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in another closely watched primary. Weiser campaigned heavily on challenging the Trump administration through the courts on issues including federal funding and birthright citizenship.

Meanwhile, State Representative Manny Rutinel secured the Democratic nomination in a competitive congressional district, setting up a November contest against Republican Rep. Gabe Evans in one of the state’s key battleground races.

Looking Ahead

The Colorado primaries underscore the growing influence of progressive candidates as Democrats seek to regain control of Congress. With Republicans holding narrow majorities in both chambers, several competitive races this fall could play a significant role in determining the balance of power in Washington.
