Demi Lovato has opened up about why she decided to begin using she/her pronouns again after previously identifying publicly as non-binary and adopting they/them pronouns.

The singer and actress, now 32, first announced in 2021 that she identified as non-binary, describing the decision as part of a long journey of healing and self-discovery.

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all,” Lovato wrote at the time. “I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”

During previous interviews, the former Disney star explained that growing up in Texas in a conservative Christian environment made conversations about gender and sexuality difficult.

“I’m a very fluid person, I’m a very free-spirited, open person,” Lovato previously shared.

She later explained that using they/them pronouns felt right during a period when she no longer strongly identified as either male or female.

Why Demi Began Using She/Her Again

Speaking on the Sprout Podcast, Lovato revealed that her feelings evolved over time and that she eventually became more comfortable reconnecting with her feminine side.

“I’ve actually adopted the pronouns of ‘she/her’ again,” Lovato explained.

The singer said there was a time when she felt caught between masculine and feminine energy, which even made simple situations feel confusing.

“I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman. I didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human.”

However, Lovato said that recently she has started feeling “more feminine,” which influenced her decision to reintroduce she/her pronouns.

She Emphasized Respect And Understanding

Although Lovato’s pronouns changed again, she stressed that the most important thing is showing respect toward people who are exploring their identity.

“Nobody’s perfect,” she said. “Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect.”

Lovato has repeatedly encouraged fans to understand that gender identity can evolve over time and that personal growth is rarely straightforward.

Demi Previously Opened Up About Living Authentically

The singer has also connected her personal journey to the end of her engagement to actor Max Ehrich in 2020.

Lovato later admitted that ending the relationship helped her better understand herself and her sexuality.

“When it didn’t work, I was like, ‘This is a huge sign,’” she previously said. “I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth.”

At the time, Lovato explained she wasn’t sure where her identity journey would eventually lead and acknowledged that her feelings could continue evolving.
