For more than four decades, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have remained one of Hollywood’s most admired couples, despite never officially getting married.
Now, Hawn is once again opening up about why the pair never felt the need to walk down the aisle, saying their relationship has always been built around freedom, trust, and accepting each other exactly as they are.
“I Don’t Feel Penned In”
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Russell explained that freedom has always been one of the foundations of their relationship.
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” the actor said while discussing their decades-long partnership.
Hawn agreed, admitting that the two still disagree on plenty of things after all these years, but believes that has actually helped their relationship survive.
“We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine,” she explained. “We’re both very spontaneous.”
Their Love Story Didn’t Begin Right Away
Although the pair first met back in 1966 while filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, romance did not immediately develop between them.

It was not until years later, after reconnecting while working together again in the early 1980s, that their relationship truly began.
Since officially becoming a couple in 1983, they have remained together through decades of Hollywood fame, raising children and building what many fans view as one of entertainment’s strongest relationships.

A Blended Hollywood Family
Together, Hawn and Russell created a large blended family that has become well-known in Hollywood circles.
Hawn is the mother of Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson from her previous marriage to Bill Hudson, while Russell shares son Boston Russell with former wife Season Hubley.
The couple also welcomed their son Wyatt Russell together in 1986.
Over time, the family’s close bond has become one of the most talked-about aspects of their relationship.
Kate Hudson Says Their Relationship Is “So Cute”
Kate Hudson has often spoken publicly about the impact Hawn and Russell’s relationship has had on their family.
During a 2024 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Hudson described the couple as “the center” of the family and said their connection has only become sweeter with age.
“Kurt just adores my mom,” Hudson said. “He just loves her so much.”
Fans online frequently point to the couple as proof that long-term relationships do not always need traditional marriage to succeed.
Goldie Hawn’s Unusual Marriage Metaphor
Hawn previously explained her views on marriage during an appearance on The Dan Buettner Podcast, comparing herself to a bird that values freedom.
“I’m a bird,” she said. “You leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.”
The quote quickly spread online and resonated with many people who related to her perspective on independence within relationships.
Why Their Relationship Still Fascinates Fans
In an industry where relationships often struggle under public pressure, Hawn and Russell’s partnership continues standing out for its longevity and apparent stability.

Rather than focusing on traditional expectations, the couple has repeatedly said their success comes from mutual respect, laughter, and allowing each other room to grow individually.
After more than 40 years together, many fans now view them as one of Hollywood’s rare lasting love stories.
