Stacey James Wondra, 33, has been ordered by the court to stand trial this September for the murder and kidnapping of five-year-old Michael Vaughan, who disappeared in July 2021. Michael was last seen at his home in Fruitland, Idaho, before vanishing.

Judge Brent Whiting set the trial to begin on September 14, with proceedings expected to last approximately four weeks. Prior to the trial, a status conference is scheduled for June 2 and a pretrial conference will take place on August 4. During a brief hearing on April 16, Wondra’s defense team indicated plans to file motions but did not disclose specifics.

Wondra faces charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the child’s disappearance and presumed death. Investigators allege that Wondra abducted Michael from his residence before killing him, although the boy’s body has yet to be recovered. Law enforcement officials have conducted extensive searches around the Wondra property as part of the investigation.

At Wondra’s preliminary hearing in March 2026, prosecutors presented a lengthy interview with Wondra, in which he implicated his wife, Sarah Wondra, in the abduction. According to statements made by Stacey Wondra during the interview, he denied direct involvement in taking the child and claimed he had recommended contacting the authorities. However, he admitted to failing to intervene as his wife and two roommates restrained Michael with duct tape while the boy reportedly cried out for his mother.

Sarah Wondra was previously charged with failing to report a death, but those charges were later dismissed. No additional suspects have been formally charged in connection to the case.

The search for Michael Vaughan and the upcoming trial remain significant developments in the ongoing investigation surrounding the boy’s disappearance and death.
