Anne Demegillo, 21, is seeking bond after being charged in connection with the death of her newborn infant, citing mental health challenges in legal filings. Demegillo faces serious charges including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and failure to report a death with intent to conceal.

The incident occurred in Bunnell, Florida, where the infant, a female weighing approximately 3.6 pounds, was discovered in a shallow grave in Demegillo’s backyard after authorities noticed what appeared to be a small human leg when brushing away the dirt.

Demegillo reportedly confessed to officers that she gave birth in her bathroom on March 5, 2026. She indicated that she placed the infant partially submerged in the toilet and observed until the child stopped moving and crying.

During her initial court appearance on April 7, 2026, Judge Dawn Nichols ordered Demegillo to remain in custody without bond. However, her legal team has filed multiple motions, including one to suppress statements made to investigators, arguing that any admissions were obtained unlawfully.

Another motion requests that Judge Nichols grant Demegillo bond set at $250,000, detailing her lack of prior criminal history, surrender of her passport, and absence of financial resources. The filing also highlights a preliminary medical opinion that Demegillo is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and/or depression, along with other mental health conditions.

Additionally, her attorneys have moved to dismiss all charges, claiming prosecutorial information is ambiguous and insufficient to proceed.

Demegillo is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on these motions and for her arraignment on April 21, 2026. The case remains under investigation, and further legal proceedings are anticipated.

This case adds to a series of recent high-profile child death and abuse investigations across the region, prompting ongoing public and judicial scrutiny.
