A woman living with a rare and severe health condition has shared how her medical needs result in extraordinary weekly expenses for food-related care.

Shayla Talei, a mother of two, lives with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and gastroparesis, a condition that severely affects her ability to digest food.

According to her account, gastroparesis has left her stomach unable to properly process solid foods, meaning she is no longer able to eat in a conventional way.

Instead, she relies on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), a method where nutrients are delivered directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous system.

She explained that her medical nutrition setup, including supplies, medication, and related care, costs around $14,000 per week before insurance coverage.

Talei has shared details of her condition on social media, where she documents her daily routine and raises awareness about life with chronic illness.

She says she began TPN after other feeding methods were no longer effective in maintaining her nutritional needs.

While insurance covers a portion of her medical expenses, she notes that she still faces ongoing out-of-pocket medical costs and debt.

Medical experts note that TPN is typically used in severe cases where the digestive system cannot absorb nutrients normally, and requires careful long-term monitoring due to potential risks.

The case highlights both the complexity and financial burden of managing rare chronic conditions that affect basic bodily functions like eating.
