YouTuber Jesse Ridgway has shared an emotional and deeply personal update after revealing that he and his wife Ashley made the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy following a Down syndrome diagnosis.
The 33-year-old creator opened up about the experience in a series of Instagram Stories posted on June 3, explaining that the couple had recently learned their unborn child had Trisomy 21, another name for Down syndrome.
“This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,” Jesse wrote. “The choice was not made lightly.”
The influencer admitted the diagnosis initially left him feeling shocked but hopeful.
“When I first confronted this news, I was shocked but optimistic,” he explained. “If they’re a little slow intellectually, then we’ll make it work. I signed on to be a parent, come what may.”
However, Jesse said that after learning more about the condition and speaking with medical professionals, family members and genetic counselors, the couple came to a painful conclusion.
He pointed to potential complications often associated with Down syndrome, including heart defects, hearing problems and developmental challenges.
“I didn’t realize just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family,” he wrote, adding that many individuals with the condition can require lifelong care and support.
Jesse also acknowledged that some followers may disagree with their decision, calling the experience “extremely traumatic” for both him and Ashley.
“This was WAY higher than I expected,” he said while discussing termination statistics connected to Down syndrome diagnoses. “I think most terminations happen privately because it feels shameful. A lot of judgment being cast.”
Despite the backlash they may face online, Jesse emphasized that the decision was made with their family’s future in mind.
“As for us, we made a difficult decision that we believe in the long run will be beneficial for our family,” he wrote. “Thankfully, we had a choice.”
The couple first announced they were expecting in March 2026, sharing sonogram photos alongside the caption: “BABY RIDGWAY — COMING FALL 2026.”
Jesse ended his statement by saying the couple hopes to try again in the future.
“It will take a little time to move on,” he shared, “but we are excited to try again and hopefully have a better outcome.”
