A new viral debate has emerged online after younger social media users attempted to replace the infamous slang term “Karen” with a new generational equivalent.
The term “Karen” — widely used online since around 2020 — is typically used to describe an entitled or overly demanding person, often stereotyped as someone quick to complain or “ask for the manager.”
Now, Gen Z and younger internet users are trying to move on from the label entirely, arguing that it has become overused. Instead, they’ve begun circulating new names to represent a modern version of the stereotype.
The New “Karen” Debate
A viral TikTok trend sparked the conversation, with users suggesting common millennial-era names that could represent a new version of the archetype.
Names floated in the discussion included Ashley, Brittany, Heather, Amber, Tiffany, Jessica, Nicole, Becky, and Kelsey.
However, one name quickly began dominating the comments section: Jessica.
Some users argued that “Jessica” fits the mold of a modern “Karen,” describing it as a name that carries similar generational associations online.
One viral comment even claimed: “Karen is Jessica’s mom,” fueling further debate.
Mixed Reactions Online
Not everyone is convinced by the new label. Many users have pushed back against the idea of replacing one stereotype with another.
“As a Jessica (I’m devastated),” one user wrote.
Another added: “Leave Jessicas alone wtf.”
Others dismissed the entire debate altogether, with comments such as: “Yeah, no. It’s still Karen,” and “Doesn’t have the same ring to it.”
A Familiar Internet Pattern
The discussion reflects a broader trend in online culture, where slang terms rapidly evolve and are frequently redefined by younger audiences.
However, as with the original “Karen” label, the new suggestions have already sparked backlash — especially from people who share the names being used in the debate.
For now, there is no official replacement, and the internet appears divided on whether the original term should even be retired at all.
