A man was taken into custody after entering the Today show’s studio at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City on Thursday morning. According to police and multiple reports, the individual allegedly bypassed security, asked for Al Roker, and confronted co-host Craig Melvin during the live broadcast.
Incident Unfolds During Morning Show
The incident occurred at around 9 a.m., when the man reportedly entered the studio and shouted at Craig Melvin, allegedly using a racial slur. Despite the disruption, no injuries were reported, and the broadcast continued after security and law enforcement responded.
Craig Melvin Speaks Out
Addressing viewers on Friday’s edition of Today, Melvin thanked those who had expressed concern following the incident.
“You may have heard that unfortunately an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A,” Melvin said. He added that the individual was quickly apprehended, arrested, and that NBC is fully cooperating with the New York Police Department, while emphasizing that everyone involved is safe.
NBC Details What Happened
In a statement, NBC News confirmed there had been a security incident at the studio. The network said the individual entered an unauthorized area near Studio 1A, approached Melvin, and was immediately reported to security. Law enforcement took the suspect into custody without further incident, and NBC said there was no physical altercation and no injuries.
Show Returned to Normal
According to reports, Melvin and Al Roker returned to the air approximately 15 minutes after the disruption. Roker later thanked supporters on social media, writing that he and Melvin were both safe and expressing gratitude to everyone who checked in following the incident.

The NYPD confirmed officers responded to reports of a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza and placed the individual into custody. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or announced a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
